wuya 2019-12-2 12:45

The United States exported more crude oil and petroleum products than it imported in September, becoming a net oil exporter for the first time in 70 years, according to data released by the energy information administration on November 29.

Us oil exports rose 18 per cent in September from a year earlier to about 8.76m b/d, according to data. Oil imports fell 12 per cent year-on-year to about 8.67m b/d, leaving a surplus of nearly 90,000 b/d.

It was the first time since 1949 that the United States had recorded a monthly oil trade surplus, making it a net oil exporter, according to kyodo.

Earlier in November, the U.S. energy information administration released a short-term energy outlook that predicted the U.S. would run a deficit in oil trade for the full year of 2019, with a deficit of 520,000 barrels per day, but a surplus of 750,000 barrels per day for the full year of 2020.

CNN reported in September 2018 that the U.S. is the world's largest oil producer, based on estimates from the U.S. department of energy.

The U.S. currently produces about 12.9 million barrels a day, according to the energy information administration's weekly report on oil supply and demand, released Nov. 27. That is much more than Saudi Arabia and Russia produce at this stage.

The us briefly overtook Saudi Arabia as the world's largest crude oil exporter in June, according to the iea's monthly report published in September. Us media reported late last year that the us had become a net exporter of crude oil, breaking its dependence on imported crude for more than 70 years. The report did not say how long the surplus would last.

The rise of us shale oil over the past decade has more than doubled oil production, changing the global energy landscape. But shale oil comes with environmental costs. The researchers cautioned that the amount of water and wastewater used to extract oil and gas from shale in the United States has increased significantly since 2011, suggesting that fracking has an even greater impact on local water resources.

Shale oil and gas are extracted using hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in which a mixture of chemicals and large amounts of water and sediment is injected into the ground at high pressure to break up rock formations near Wells and capture oil and natural gas.
