The trade war between China and the United States has disrupted global supply chains, but more than a quarter of multinational companies have yet to make contingency plans, according to a survey by a subsidiary of express delivery giant deutsche post, Reuters reported Tuesday.

The survey received 267 anonymous responses from multinational executives, mostly from us and eu companies, in industries including healthcare, cars and consumption. Of those, 48 percent of engineers and manufacturers and 40 percent of auto makers said they had no contingency plans in place, even though both sectors would be hit hard by a trade war. Among those who decided not to move operations or production out of China, some said they were unaffected by the trade war. But 43 per cent said long-standing links with Chinese factories and suppliers, as well as the cost and time involved in moving, were reasons to stay put. Only 8 percent said they expected the tariffs to eventually be eliminated. Some of the 12 per cent who had already moved production out of China said they faced a shortage of skilled workers, a severe backlog of goods at ports and difficult problems maintaining supplier quality.

Some analysts say many companies don't even know what to do about new situations they've never encountered before. ▲ (li xue)
