Habana

2019-12-17 14:47

On December 17th Intel announced it was buying Habana, a maker of AI chips, for $2 billion.

The market for AI chips is growing rapidly, with Intel projecting a market worth more than $25 billion by 2024, including more than $10 billion for AI chips in data centers. The acquisition of HabanaLabs, the israel-based developer of programmable deep learning accelerators for data centers, will help Intel expand in the AI chip market.

"This acquisition advances our AI strategy, which will provide customers with solutions to meet a variety of performance needs, from smart edges to data centers," said NavinShenoy, Intel's executive vice President and general manager of data platforms. More specifically, Habana has accelerated the evolution of AI products for data centers to cope with changing AI workloads with its high performance training processor family and standards-based programming environment."

Intel has previously invested in Habana. Habana will exist as a separate business unit. Avigdor Willenz, chairman of HabanaLabs, will serve as a senior advisor to the business and Intel after Intel acquires Habana. Habana will remain based in Israel and will continue to be led by the current management team, reporting to Intel data. Habana will have access to Intel's AI capabilities, including substantial resources accumulated over the past three years. The aforementioned deep accumulation of AI software, algorithms and research will help Habana accelerate its growth.
